Chapter One: Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study

Urban slums are often characterized by overcrowding, inadequate housing, poor sanitation, and limited access to essential services, creating significant challenges for the residents and broader society. Ungogo Local Government Area in Kano State faces such issues, with a growing number of urban slums stemming from rapid urbanization and socio-economic disparities. Photography has emerged as a powerful tool for raising awareness about these marginalized communities, providing visual narratives that capture the lived realities of slum dwellers and highlight the urgency for intervention. Globally, photojournalists and advocacy groups have used photography to influence public opinion, attract the attention of policymakers, and mobilize resources for slum upgrading projects. In Ungogo, where media coverage of urban slums is often limited, photography can bridge this gap by documenting the struggles and resilience of the affected communities. This study investigates the use of photography in raising awareness about urban slums in Ungogo, emphasizing its role in fostering advocacy, driving social change, and promoting inclusive development.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Despite the growing prevalence of urban slums in Ungogo, awareness of their challenges and needs remains limited, leading to inadequate policy interventions and resource allocation. Traditional forms of advocacy and documentation often fail to capture the complex realities of these communities or resonate with broader audiences. Photography, with its ability to depict the human condition, can serve as a transformative medium for raising awareness and inspiring action. However, the potential of photography in this context remains largely underutilized due to constraints such as limited access to professional photographers, lack of funding, and insufficient awareness of its power as an advocacy tool. This study addresses these issues by exploring how photography can effectively document and communicate the challenges of urban slums in Ungogo to foster meaningful change.
